Modern Color Theory by DwellStudio and Robert Allen is a collaboration of unique printed fabrics and standout wovens. This new collection infuses midcentury modern design with global craft. Its playful patterns and bold color palette take cues from abstract art and early modernism. Modern Color Theory brings a contemporary spin to livable fabrics, creating new classics for today’s home.
When designing DwellStudio aimed to create a new collection that is timelessly chic, but still uses trends relevant in today’s interiors, fashion, and art for a modern edge. For its patterns, Modern Color Theory draws on an arts and crafts feel taken from early abstract art, with an emphasis on intentional imperfection. Geometric lines appear to have an almost hand-drawn quality, and painterly florals blur and overlap one another like a cut-paper collage.
The collection also features oversized geometrics, conversational animal motifs and whimsical stripes. The colours are full of attitude in richly saturated shades such as Malachite, a lush full green; Citrine, a chic bright yellow, often paired with a sophisticated grey; and Ultramarine, a deep hue of ocean blue.
Patterns of note include:
Coco, a dramatic, graphic geometric on a linen slub, draws inspiration from an abstract painting. (Copper, Brindle, Ultramarine, Malachite)
Zebra Geo features a graphic twist on a classic animal print in a sophisticated and chic jacquard construction. (Currant, Copper, Ink)
Caravan is a playful piece featuring a unique antelope print. (Citrine, Copper)
High Wire is custom made in India and features boldly colored hand-appliqued ribbons on a linen ground. (Malachite, Ink, Ultramarine, Linen)
Crosby displays swirling leaves in the style of a hand-drawn Scandinavian floral. (Mineral Green, Citrine)
Kings Walk, a playful lion damask pattern that shows pure primary colors mixed with softer earth tones. (Vapor, Citrine, Ultramarine)
Landsmeer’s painterly watercolor floral pattern is a work of art in itself. Its sophisticated abstract motif adds a decadent flourish to any interior. (Citrine, Ultramarine, Currant)
Malakos is inspired by Malachite, a semi-precious gemstone recognisable for its distinct colouring. With alternating bands of light and dark this design is a chic statement piece that packs a punch. (Ink, Malachite, Ultramarine)
